Following the government announcement on the 13th March 2019 that new developments must deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), it was an interesting and engaging day at the CIEEM BNG Conference yesterday.

It is evident that whilst emerging policy offers promise for a streamlined and standardised approach to BNG in the planning system, it is now crucial to secure effective mechanisms to measure and deliver BNG on development sites.

Future topics in the emerging field of BNG include the release of the DEFRA Metric 2.0 (a habitat based metric tool to track and measure biodiversity through the development process), a Natural England Eco-Metric, and Conservation Covenants as a potential mechanism to safeguard the delivery of BNG.
