Client: Mercia Marina
Site Name: Mercia Marina, Findern Lane, Willington, Derby, DE65 6DW
Site Type: Mixed-use Commercial Development
Services Provided: Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA), Phase 1 Habitat Survey, Preliminary Bat Roost Assessment Survey
Due to the site being suspected of containing protected habitats and protected species, our ecological services were required to assess potential constraints and inform the development process.
The proposed habitat enhancements included strengthening the existing hedgerow and planting native street trees in the surrounding amenity space.
Precautionary working methods were recommended during the construction process, which avoided further surveys being required before the determination of the planning application, ensuring swift time scales and no delays in ecology for the client. Precautionary working methods recommended included measures to avoid harming Great Crested Newt (GCN) and reptiles during development, such as sensitive vegetation clearance. Pollution prevention measures were also recommended to be included in the site’s Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) to avoid construction impacts to surrounding habitats, including open water.
Planning consent was secured as the Local Planning Authority granted planning permission with conditions to Mercia Marina.
A Derbyshire Live news article reported “the new facility would create 43 new jobs and represent an £11.9 million investment in the local economy over the next 10 years.”
