Assistant Ecologist

About The Role

Location: Castle Donington, East Midlands / Flexible working

Salary: £23,000 – £25,000 (dependent on skills and experience)

Contract Type: Full time, permanent, 37.5 hours per week

Job Overview

As an Assistant Ecologist at Elton Ecology Ltd, you’ll play a vital role in our team, assisting with a variety of tasks, from protected species and habitat surveys to report drafting and data analysis. You’ll receive comprehensive training and mentoring from senior team members to develop your skills and expertise in ecological consultancy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with protected species and habitat surveys.
  • Contribute to draft reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Ecological Impact Assessments.
  • Analyse and process survey data including data collected via data collection apps, bat echolocation sound files and infrared camera video data.
  • Collaborate with team members and work independently as required.
  • Maintain a professional attitude towards work and uphold company standards.

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Relevant Degree.
  • Basic understanding of ecological consultancy (no prior experience necessary).
  • Interest in British wildlife and field survey.
  • Ability to work in a team as well as independently.
  • Professional attitude towards work.
  • Ability to commute to our Castle Donington office.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.

Senior Ecologist

About The Role

As a Senior Ecologist, you’ll lead and deliver projects to our clients with excellence and efficiency, all while upholding the highest standards of professional integrity. You’ll play a pivotal role in independently conducting site surveys, mentoring junior staff, producing technical reports, and expanding your expertise into exciting new areas like biodiversity net gain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project management.
  • Supporting clients through all project stages.
  • Planning and undertaking ecological surveys.
  • Liaising and negotiating with statutory agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Producing a wide range of technical reports including Preliminary Ecological Appraisal and Ecological Impact Assessment.
  • Preparation of fee quotes and tenders.
  • Supporting and mentoring junior members of the team.
  • Deliver work to a high professional standard and act within the CIEEM Professional Code of Conduct at all times.

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Relevant degree in Ecology or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of ecology, legislation, and best practice guidelines in England.
  • Membership of appropriate professional body (e.g., CIEEM) or willingness to apply.
  • Experience in Biodiversity Net Gain and Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), or keen to develop skills in these areas.
  • Ability to undertake UKHab Surveys independently and/or holding protected species licence(s).
  • Interest in project management, client liaison, tendering, and business development activities.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence.
  • Eligible to work in the UK.

To achieve this, we’re seeking a talented Office Administrator to join our team and contribute to our success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage staff resourcing, site access, and survey schedules in close collaboration with project managers.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for customers, providing outstanding service in person, via email, and over the phone.
  • Handle purchase orders, invoices, sales, debtors, and bank transactions with precision and efficiency.
  • Liaise with accountants and payroll providers, ensuring seamless financial processes.
  • Address customer and supplier inquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain and update internal and external emails, responding to correspondence with professionalism.
  • Oversee office supplies and inventory, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Manage Health & Safety procedures, site access, and administration, supporting staff with assessments and training.
  • Maintain and update project management and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
  • Assist with basic marketing tasks to support business growth.

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Able to commute to and work from our Castle Donington office.
  • Professional telephone manner and exceptional customer service skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office suites with good computer literacy.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
  • Basic knowledge of accounts processes.
  • Adaptability and willingness to flexibly handle duties according to team or business needs.
  • Hold a full valid UK Driving Licence.
  • Educated to GCSE or equivalent (preferred).
  • Desire for career development and progression within the company.
  • Previous experience in an administrative role.
