Established in 2018, Elton Ecology Ltd is a rapidly expanding independent ecology consultancy providing services across a range of sectors including major infrastructure, utilities, commercial and residential development schemes.

About the Role

We are offering an opportunity to join our small and friendly team assisting with a large volume of ecology field surveys through the 2021 ecology survey season across the East and West Midlands, and occasionally further afield. Full training and support from experienced ecologists will be provided.

This is initially a seven-month contract with a view of being kept on as a permanent member of the team, subject to review at the end of the survey season. Both part-time and full-time applications welcome.

Day to Day Duties

Successful applicants will assist in undertaking a range of ecology surveys (including great crested newt, and nocturnal bat dusk/dawn surveys). Dependent on candidate progression, there may be the opportunity for involvement and training in bat sound analysis and inputting into draft technical reports.

Successful Candidate

Essential

  • An Honours degree in ecology, environmental science, or related field.
  • Eligibility and willingness to work towards CIEEM membership.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current relevant UK wildlife legislation.
  • Well organised with a proven track record of good time management and communication skills.
  • Pro-active, reliable, and willing to travel between survey sites working unsocial hours and with overnight stays (subject to Covid-19 restrictions).
  • Capable of managing a challenging workload subject to change at short notice.
  • Full UK Driving license.

Desirable

  • Qualifying member of CIEEM.
  • Postgraduate degree.
  • Relevant work experience, either voluntary/ charitable or as part of a degree.
  • Ecology survey and bat sound analysis experience.
  • Working towards or holding one or more protected species survey licences.
  • First Aid at Work Training.
  • CSCS card holder.

Bat Licenced Consultant Ecologist

About the Role

We are offering an opportunity to join our small and friendly team working across the East and West Midlands, and occasionally further afield. Day to day duties will include:

  • Planning and undertaking protected species surveys.
  • Drafting high quality technical reports and other ecology deliverables including Preliminary Bat Roost Assessments, Protected Species Reports and Method Statements.
  • Leading a range of surveys as part of a survey team.
  • Managing and training assistant level members of the team.

Training and support from experienced ecologists will be provided. Both part-time and full-time applications welcome.

Successful Candidate

Essential

  • Bat licence (Level 2 preferred).
  • Experience in the ecology sector within professional consultancy.
  • A degree in ecology or related field.
  • Eligibility for CIEEM membership.
  • Project management experience of small/medium sized projects.
  • Understanding of relevant UK legislation, planning policy and the planning application process.
  • Capable of managing a challenging workload subject to change at short notice.
  • Experienced in conducting Preliminary Bat Roost Assessment surveys.
  • Proven track record of drafting clear and concise technical reports including Preliminary Bat Roost Assessments, Protected Species Reports, and mitigation design.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Experience in planning and resourcing ecological surveys.
  • A Full UK Driving license.

Desirable

  • Additional protected species licences (i.e., great crested newt).
  • Proficient in GIS software packages (preferably QGIS).
  • NPTC Tree Climbing qualified, or desire to become so.
  • ECoW experience, including delivering contractor toolbox talks.
  • Experience in conducting Phase 1/ UK Hab surveys and drafting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals.
  • Associate or Full member of CIEEM.
  • Postgraduate degree.
  • EPS Mitigation licence application/ named ecologist experience.
  • First Aid at Work Training.
  • CSCS card holder.
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain/ Habitat Metrics/ UK Hab.
